TUF Season 12

Tonight marked the third episode of TUF 12 and it did not disappoint. The show opens with “Bruce Lee-roy” going on and on about his last fight. Needless to say, everyone in the house was getting annoyed.

The teams begin training and its obvious there is a difference in the way Koscheck and GSP coach. While we catch GSP telling his team to have fun, Koscheck gathers his team to tell them that they’re not working hard enough.

The fight is picked as its Michael Johnson (1st pick) vs the englishman, Aaron Wilkinson. The first round starts with Johnson throwing leg kicks while Wilkinson counters with jabs and straights. Johnson finally shoots in for a takedown but can only hold his opponent down briefly. Wilkinson returns the favor and takes Johnson down against the fence. The round ends with Wilkinson dropping short elbows.

Round 2 opens with Johnson trying to pressure but “English” keeps him at bay with his jabs. Johnson lands a nice superman punch and pushes his opponent to the fence. Wilkinson gets off the cage and presses forward with straight rights before he’s taken down. Johnson shows his jiu jitsu skills and takes Wilkinson’s back before the fight gets back to the feet. Wilkinson scores another takedown against the fence and continues to punish Johnson. Johnson gets up and takes Wilkinson down with a double leg takedown. Wilkinson gets up and they meet back in the center of the cage. The few exchange briefly but fatigue is setting in before Dana shouts “come on boys! Who wants it?” Wilkinson’s team is calling for him to push Johnson to the fence but cannot take him down. Fight goes to a 3rd.

During the commerical break, I think I saw a glimpse of Johnson choking Wilkinson with a rear naked choke.

The 3rd opens with Johnson turning it up and scoring a quick takedown. He punishes Wilkinson and gets his back, finishing him with a rear naked choke.

Commercial break RUINED it. Good job UFC.

TUF Season 12

Second episode of The Ultimate Fighter aired tonight and I wasn’t disappointed. The season starts with both coaches coming up with their list of who they are going to pick.

After making their selections, we get to meet the coaching staff on both sides. This season has the very best coaches ever. St Pierre’s coaching staff includes Greg Jackson and muay thai specialist, Phil Nurse. On the other side, Koscheck brings in American Kickboxing Academy coaches Bob Cook, Javier Melendez, and Olympic-wrestler, Daniel Cormier.

The first fight of the season pitted “Bruce Lee-roy” (Alex Caceres) against the cigarette smoking Kyle Watson. The fight opens up as Watson rushes Bruce Lee-roy into the cage, using his weight to smother him. After a few brief exchanges, the wrestling continues and the bell sounds to end the round.

As the second round starts, Watson goes in for the kill as Caceres constantly shoots for the guillotine choke. The fight goes to the ground with Watson on top as Caceres pulls off a triangle to win the fight in the second round.

Vitor Belfort vs Anderson Silva Set For 2011

September 22, 2010 Leave a comment

Contrary to earlier reports, Vitor Belfort has not been sidelined due to an injury. According to a tweet 3 hours ago, UFC President, Dana White confirmed that Belfort pulled out of the UFC 122 because he will instead face off against middleweight champ, Anderson Silva early in 2011.

Nate Marquardt was brought in to replace Belfort and will fight Yushin Okami for the #1 contender spot. The winner of that fight will fight the winner of Belfort vs Silva for the title.

Belfort Out, Marquardt In

September 21, 2010 Leave a comment

Nor-Cal MMA has just learned that Vitor Belfort has been forced out of UFC 122 by an injury. It is still unclear what the extent of the injury is.

This announcement came just a day after we were notified that the winner of Belfort vs Yushin Okami would get a title shot. Now with Belfort out, the UFC has brought in Nate Marquardt, fresh off his win at Ultimate Fight Night 22.

Belfort has not fought since beating Rich Franklin in a catchweight bout at 195 lbs. With Belfort out and Chael Sonnen facing a suspension, one can only assume that Marquardt could get his rematch with champ, Anderson Silva. But first, Marquardt has to get through a tough opponent in Yushin Okami.

Sonnen Failed Drug Test Update

September 20, 2010 Leave a comment

Nor-Cal MMA just learned that former UFC middleweight contender, Chael Sonnen could be out of action until September 2, 2011 if he chooses not to appeal the test results.

Although details are not out of what he tested positive for, the CSAC did report that Sonnen had levels of testosterone that were “well above” normal.

This would also put a damper on what would have been a rematch of his near destruction of current middleweight champ, Anderson Silva.

Sonnen has until years end to appeal the test results or he will face the year-long suspension and $2,500 fine.

Chael Sonnen Drug Test Update

September 20, 2010 Leave a comment

Lance Pugmire of The L.A. Times spoke with CSAC executive officer, George Dodd and has reported that a mistake was made in recent citings of UFC middleweight contender, Chael Sonnen’s failed drug test.
Initially, reports stated that Sonnen failed a post-fight drug test, but we have been informed that the test was taken before the fight.
The UCLA olympic drug-testing lab processed the test and reported that Sonnen tested positive for a “natural steroid”.
Nevertheless, Sonnen will likely face a suspension of up to one year. That means that fight fans around the world will have to wait until next summer if the rematch with champion, Anderson Silva will still be set.
