Whats Next for Welterweight Champs St-Pierre and Diaz?

With the recent punishing of top UFC welterweight contender, Josh Koscheck, and a submission victory over Evangalista Cyborg Santos, UFC and Strikeforce welterweight champs, Georges St-Pierre and Nick Diaz seem to have gone through their entire division. So now what’s next?

St-Pierre is slated to take on recent UFC signee, Jake Shields at UFC 129. If St-Pierre retains his title, who else is there to fight? Most believe that St-Pierre will follow through with a previous statement that would see him move up to middleweight to challenge pound-for-pound king Anderson Silva. While many would love to see this mega fight (myself included), I’m not sure its the right fight for him. Although he is highly skilled, St-Pierre would be on the short end of a weight, height, and skill advantage.

Nick Diaz, on the other hand, has gone through every contender Strikeforce throws at him. Recent wins over Cyborg, KJ Noons, and Scott Smith, have proven that there is no one on the roster left to challenge the Strikeforce champ. Many reporters have speculated that Scott Coker (Strikeforce CEO) may give rising star Tyron Woodley, jiu jitsu ace Andre Galvao, or the hard hitting Paul Daley the next shot at the title. But what would a win over any of those three do for Diaz’s career? Nothing.

With St-Pierre’s dilemma of no one else to fight and no one on the Strikeforce roster that can help elevate Diaz’s career, it seems only right for the two to meet in a cross promotion fight between the UFC and Strikeforce. Although Dana White would never promote with the only other major MMA promotion in the world, both fighters have no one else to fight. Dana White needs to stop with the politics and finally do something right for the fans.
